Urban Greenery - How it matters more to have trees planted in your own backyard

Green roofs and a balanced greener surrounding is now ever more so necessary given the need to immediately offset and balance out carbon emissions and have a healthier production of oxygen in the environment. It was always pointed out that we should plant trees, but while this is valuable, its efficiency in immediately improving our own immediate environment is not as effective as having greenery right where we are.

There is a more immediate need to balance out humans to plants per square meter in urban areas. There are still opportunities to use roofs, balconies, and even windows for plants. Green roofs, which has gained great popularity in US and Europe, was able to present through its case studies that it has helped reduce the hot island effect, increase oxygen levels, and even bring back avian species to the city. There are many more advantages to bringing in window plants (compliments of an advocate friend, Romana, in teaching me about it), roof gardens, and balanced plant ratio in areas with no plants. Many other places do take advantage of this concept and actually come up with community gardens as well.

It is strange enough that while we are completely knowledgeable about the benefits of having plants, we ignore and go otherwise. If we can take this opportunity to green our urban surroundings, and many advocates would love to do so, we can create a greener change.

  1. Great blog! One of my frustrations is coming up with a blog about the environment because I support the advocacy; though I lack knowledge about the whole environmental thing and the different causes and effects regarding it.

However, I've had my fair share of environment friendly activities. Ever since the tree planting activity in KMBI (where I work and an NGO helping the entrepreneur poor people) and in cooperation with Haribon, I've been more active with regard to environmental activities; but only within the family and my friends. Been using organic stuff too and all.

Kudos with the blog! You'll love to know that KMBI has organized tree planting activities all over the Philippines and their actually looking for blogger partners. if you're interested u can check out their website: http://www.kmbi.org.ph i super love their activities! :)

  2. I am helping the community to make it clean and green in my very own simple way of cleaning my surroundings and planting trees in my backyard. Sometimes we help some organization to plant a tree in different place like Antipolo.

  4. Very great idea! In that way we can change our surroudings by simply planting plants especially in our backyards. It has a big help for our future generations, they still need fresh air/oxygen and beautiful surroundings. If every family every house will plant trees, we can save our Earth and lives.

  5. Planting a tree in a backyard is the simplest thing to do, because it can help us to save our nature, especially in the Philippines, because many trees were cut down just to build infrastructures. Trees can make our surroundings look clean and it can give us clean oxygen. Imagine if all of the people in the world plants a tree in their backyard, there still can be a chance to save our environment. We live in a compound, in our compound, we have plenty of plants that are beside each house and a tree beside the gate. It is my grandmother's idea to plant plants in our compound, that's why sometimes every morning, I went outside to inhale fresh air, inhaling fresh air can make you feel healthy and for me it is good for our lungs. Tree symbolizes life, because it produces oxygen that can be inhaled by animals and humans, if there were only few trees on earth, maybe it can unbalance the nature. Trees saves us and protects us, that's why we also need to protect them.
